In March 2001 a special report was published in Postgraduate Medicine titled, "Treatment of Depression in Women." PMDD was one of the topics covered. The PMDD treatment guidelines were developed from a survey of 36 experts (mostly psychiatrists). The guidelines are general treatment suggestions and they may or may not apply to individual patients. Seven specific PMDD guidelines are presented: 1) Evaluation of PMDD, 2) Initial overall treatment approach, 3) Medication strategies, 4) Antidepressants, 5) Other pharmacologic strategies, 6) Nonpharmacologic approaches and 7) Next steps for inadequate response. While the PMDD treatment guidelines are written for clinicians, some non-professionals may find them of interest.
